Is Negative SEO Still a Thing in 2026?

Negative SEO isn't very easy to do now because if you send shitty quality backlinks to a website in order for it to "loose" authority, the website owner can always disavow such links.

All my websites / projects backlinks built with automation with super clean anchortext profile those are so nice ahrefs and majestic clean backlink profiles however recently my competitors (who also use like myself automation tools like gsa or ranker x on their websites) and notice they are throwing me super irrelevant anchortext for my site and my site ranking than before. I have never done negative SEO purposely to any of my competitors cause I believe it's not ethical and not for inner conscience anyway doing so it helps lol. If it's an established website it's actually nothing hurt if it's a non-established site still it doesn't matter more either way it really doesn't matter

You are right. I have similar experience. Once I ran a project with naked anchor text %ANCHORTEXT% without % and after a few weeks it's all over the place and still it doesn't have hard results, but added many keywords since other campaigns' anchor works fine so I guess you are right

Yes, it can also be highly effective, depending on how it's implemented. Such attacks are inherently dynamic and evolve over time, varying based on the attacker's methods, so there is no one-size-fits-all solution that can address every scenario. That said, in most cases, it's unlikely that you will ever be targeted by such attacks.
 
Negative SEO isn’t dead, it’s just harder to pull off now. You can’t just spam a few thousand links and expect results anymore. It usually takes a combination of factors to actually hurt a site.
I’ve seen it work mostly on churn & burn projects or parasite SEO pages, not really on solid brands.
For defense, I just keep things clean and build authority. Prevention is way easier than fixing damage.

yeah negative SEO isn’t really as effective now since Google got better at ignoring spammy links, but in rare cases (like massive toxic link blasts) it can still cause short-term dips.

best protection is keeping a clean backlink profile, monitoring in Google Search Console, and using the Google Disavow Tool if needed.
 
Yes Negative SEO still exists in 2026, but has less impact. Google has gotten smart enough to ignore most spam links ,So Negative SEO is not as dangerous as it used to be But In extreme cases (toxic backlinks, hacking, etc.) it can be harmful.
 
I assume it's still possible but you probably need deep pockets to even attempt it now.

Real risks are usually hackling, toxic redirects, fake DMMCA complaints or mass spam attacks

Monitor backlinks regularly with tools like Google Search Console and keep your site secure
 
Mostly still a thing, but way less “direct impact” than people think unless the site is very new or weak. For established sites, Google just filters most of it out, so prevention + monitoring matters more than disavowing after the fact.
 
Now still possible, but definitely not as effective – Google ignores most of spammy backlinks now, so regular "spambastic" negative SEO doesn't impact your rankings much anymor
The most recent real-life situations involve hacks, spoofed Google Searh Console actions, or even poisoning/indexing problems rather than spammy links causing any damage
The best way to protect yourself is simple hygiene – monitor Google Searh Console for suspicious links, setup alets, secure your site, and disavow oly when somthing looks fishy
