Hi guys,
Everyone has one. A campaign you paused for a reason that seemed logical at the time. Then when you restarted nothing ever worked the same.Mine was a Google search campaign that had been running for 8 months. Client asked to pause for a product revamp. 6 weeks pause. Could never get back to previous performance. The algorithm had forgotten everything. Took another 4 months to get close.
What campaign do you regret pausing?

I paused a winning Facebook ad for just two weeks when we ran out of stock. When I turned it back on, the algorithm completely forgot who my buyers were.

I paused a steady retargeting ad for a month, and the costs tripled when I turned it back on. The pixel completely lost its recent data momentum.

Paused a high ROAS retargeting campaign thinking it will be easy to switch back… but performance dropped hard and never fully bounced back.

same story basically, paused for "budget reasons" for 2 weeks and quality score never fully recovered after

Yeah learned this the hard way with a high ticket lead gen campaign on search. Paused it for a holiday weekend years ago and it just died when we turned it back on. Now I never pause anything if I can help it. If a client wants to pause for a few weeks I just drop the budget to like 5% of the original and let it trickle. Keeps the algorithm active and saves you from having to go through learning phase again. @NOV 6 weeks is brutal though, at that point you sometimes have to just duplicate the campaign and start fresh because the original is basically bricked.

I once paused a high-performing Google Search campaign during a website redesign. The break was only a few weeks, but when it came back, CPA increased and it took months to recover.

I once paused a winning ad campaign for a client update and it never really got back to the same performance even after restarting.

I had one product ad that I had to pause because it went out of stock. After restock, I restarted it but it never performed as strongly as before, even though it was still decent.

The classic reason for stopping such a campaign is a stockout! Not once, it happened like 10+ times, and then I realized I needed to find the reliable supplier before we started the campaign again. Can't lose money or close a great going campaign for the seller's incompetence.

Still, I didn't find one - maybe I am not trying hard. But I will soon!

This is the worst feeling in PPC. I paused a high converting Google Search campaign for a short vacation, and when we restarted, the CPCs doubled because the algorithm lost all its recent conversion history.

yeah honestly had one google search campaign too, was running smooth for months then paused it for a while and it never really came back the same again, tried everything but performance just wasn’t like before anymore.

yeah happened with a scaling google search campaign, paused it for a short break and after restart it never hit same numbers again, still regret killing the momentum.

What campaign do you regret pausing?
I regret pausing a seasonal campaign too early. When I restarted later, audience behavior had shifted and results dropped.

Had one running for about 4 months on a SaaS affiliate offer brand keyword campaign, $0.06 average CPC, converting consistently. Paused it to test a different offer thinking I'd come back to it in 2 weeks. came back 3 weeks later and the account was in a different state. Same keywords, same bids, same landing page. CPC jumped to $0.40, quality score dropped, and impressions were a fraction of what they were. Took another 7 weeks of burning budget to get anywhere close to the original performance, and it never fully recovered. The thing that hurt the most was understanding why afterward. The campaign had 4 months of data click patterns, conversion timing, seasonal signals. Google's smart bidding had built a model around that. When you pause and restart, it doesn't just pick up where it left off. It starts re-learning while spending at a less optimized rate. Now I never fully pause a campaign that's running profitably. If I need to stop spending temporarily, I drop the CPC or max CPA target down to an almost impossibly low number low enough that the campaign gets zero impressions and spends nothing, but it stays active in Google's eyes. The algorithm keeps the historical data intact. When I'm ready to scale back up, I just raise the bid and it picks up close to where it left off instead of starting from scratch. If I need to test something else, I run it in a separate campaign. the original stays "live" in maintenance mode. It's a small habit change that saves months of re-learning budget.

What campaign do you regret pausing?
A stable, 12 month Google Shopping campaign that I paused for a 3-week warehouse stock holiday. when I turned it back on, the data was totally dead and it completely blew up our CPA.

I turned off a steady e commerce campaign during a minor supply shortage and deeply regretted it. the system lost its perfect buyer profile, and it took months of burning cash to fix it.

I stopped a stable lead generation campaign for a client who wanted to fix their backend system. Restarting it killed our high quality score, and our average cost per lead tripled of months.

What campaign do you regret pausing?
I have seen this in cases where there was already stability and good data history with the campaigns. Often times, pausing is not only about stopping the traffic but about breakinng what has been learned over a period of tym . Now, I rather reduce the budget than pause the campaign altogether.
