It feels like engagement and relationships matter much more than raw follower numbers now. Have you found that smaller communities with active conversations produce better business results than accounts with large audiences but very little interation?

Engagement has always been important on social media. It's not recent.

Follower count still matters for the first impression, but it’s not the main signal anymore. IG seems to care a lot more about whether a small group keeps coming back and actually replying in stories/DMs. A tighter audience with a clear lane can performs better than a bigger page with weak interaction.

i dont think it only happens with ig, every social platform should focus more on engagement rather than boost followers only

While follower count remains important, actual engagement and response rates are more critical for evaluating an account's effectiveness; you need to create high-quality, highly shareable content.

engagement has always been the main metric. It has risen in 2026 because bot accounts are being aggressively taken down. So you might see a "small" account with millions of views because of their good engagement metrics

Follower count still matters for social proof, but engagement is what pays the bills. I've seen niche pages with a few thousand followers outperform much larger accounts because the audience actually trusts the creator and participates in conversations. Quality of followers beats quantity most of the time.

I think engagement is a more accurate indicator of authenticity than follower count. The same principle applies to virtually any platform.

Relationships with other creators is more important. User engagement can also improve because of it when others share your content.

100%, micro communities convert way better than ghost followers ever will

Exactly. Small, close-knit communities often deliver superior business results due to higher loyalty and better conversion rates. Deep interaction builds trust, which in turn makes purchasing decisions easier compared to large but disconnected accounts.

Yes, definitely. A smaller audience that actually comments and engages is often more valuable than a large audience that doesn't interact.
I've seen small communities generate better business results than much bigger accounts.
