No they don't offer proper tools to monetize other than their own ads and only they make bank. If you want to make money you should go with a self hosted site if you plan to monetize it later.

they can still be useful for testing ideas or learning the basics but if you are serious about building long term traffic then i would start with your own domain. it gives you more control and you are building an asset you actually own.
