How do I recognize any harmful or bad backlinks that may affect my SEO?

I usually spot the sketchy stuff by checking how quickly those links appeared and whether the sites linking look like someone threw them together in five minutes. If something feels off, I toss the URL into GSC or Ahrefs and see if the site has any real traffic. If it's a ghost town with spammy neighbors, I just treat that link like junk mail and move on.

If these are created by competitor as a part of negative seo, google can automatically detect this.
 
Bad backlinks usually come from spammy irrelevant or low quality websites Check for unnatural anchor text link farms and sites with no real traffic
 
links from niche irrelevant pages/posts, low profile directory links, comments backlinks etc.
 
i usually look for links coming from irrelevant sites, spam heavy pages or networks that seem built only for seo. A few low quality links normally are not a problem but if a large percentage of your profile looks unnatural then it is worth investigating further. Context and relevance matter more than just the like count.
 
one thing i check is whether the linking site would send real visitors even without seo value. if a backlink comes from a site that looks abandoned, unrelated or full of spammy outbound links but it is usually not a great sign. quality and relevance matter more than the raw number of links.

In my opinion, Focus on overall backlink quality rther than worrying about every bad link. search engines are generally better now at ignoring many low quality links instead of penalising sites automatically.
 
I've run into weird backlink surprises before, especially from sites that had nothing to do with my niche. For me, running a backlink audit once a month makes a huge difference - catching those baddies early is way easier than cleaning up a bigger mess later. SEMrush shows spam scores now, which helps me flag the worst offenders before Google even gives me a warning.
