How Do You Check If a Keyword Is Too Competitive?

Just search the keyword on Google and check the first page. If you see big websites getting ranked on that keyword, it means that keyword has good competition

A quick way to judge competition is to Google the keyword and check who owns the first page.

When brands like Forbes, Wikipedia, and major industry sites dominate every position, I usually look for a longer tail variation instead.
 
To judge keyword competition, check who ranks on page one if its mostly big authority sites with strong backlinks, its usually tough to compete. You can also use SEO tools for keyword difficulty scores and aim for terms where a new site can realistically offer better or more focused content.

yes it is the best tool to help him with keyword research to determine whether a keyword is low or high comp. Did you misunderstand?
 
I don't look at search volume alone. I check the sites ranking on page 1. If the results are mostly big brands and high authority websites, I skip that keyword
 
For new blogs, I’ve found that search intent and the strength of the sites already ranking matter far more than search volume—sometimes a 100-search long-tail keyword is worth more than a 1,000-search keyword dominated by authority sites.

I didn't misunderstand, I just find it hard to believe that Ahrefs will fix all of his problem (with 100% certainty too mind you!), especially if he's a newbie. That's what's hard for me to believe, but I'll give you that Ahrefs is a good tool :)
 
If the first page is filled with authority site that is site that have above 60DR. Then you should know that keyword is difficult.
 
I usually pop my main keyword into Google and check who’s in the top 10, then peek at their backlink profile with ahrefs or a free checker if cash is tight. If I see a handful of Reddit threads or random forums ranking high, I know there’s still room for a newbie blog. Sometimes tweaking your target with a question phrase gets you way easier hits.
