The SEC has confirmed that some crypto wallets and DeFi apps do not require brokerage licenses if they only function as simple tools.
These platforms cannot hold users' funds, provide trading advice, or encourage users to buy or sell. The app must remain neutral, only displaying objective data such as prices and clearly explaining how the system works.
Fees must be simple and transparent. This regulation creates a 5-year window for these apps to operate more flexibly while still ensuring user protection.

Feels like this could push more devs to keep their apps super lean and hands-off, which might actually make things less messy for users. I’m curious how many projects will rethink their fee setups though, since “transparent” can mean very different things in practice. Five years sounds long on paper, but in crypto years it’s basically a weekend, so I’d bet some teams start future-proofing early.

Kinda feels like the SEC is trying to draw a line in the sand without kicking half the space off the beach. I like that they’re giving devs breathing room, but the real test will be how clearly apps show pricing without turning the UI into a wall of fine print. I’m curious if smaller teams can keep things simple enough to fit this model without losing features people actually use.
