I’m still new to SEO, but I have noticed some small sites with only a few detailed articles ranking better than sites with tons of supporting posts.
Do you guys think Google prefers quality and consolidation more than massive topical clusters now?

A bit, yes, but Google seems much better now at rewarding strong, complete content instead of huge content clusters full of thin articles.

One excellent page can outperform 20 average supporting posts.

Topical authority still helps, but in 2026 relevance and depth win. A small site with a few genuinely useful articles can outperform massive sites packed with shallow content because Google now values intent match and real value over pure volume.

Yes google always prefer quality content

I'd say it was overrated even in 2025.
It's important, it moves the needle, but it doesn't stand on it's own. People used to treat it like an ace in the sleeve and it was never that important.

It’s not that topical authority is overrated, it’s just that the way Google measures it has evolved. In 2026, Google seems to prioritize 'Information Gain' over just repetitive clusters.

I don’t think topical authority is overrated but quality definitely seems more important now, A smaller site with genuinely useful content can sometimes outperform larger sites with a lot of filler pages

It seems like google's leaning more towards quality and thoroughness over sheer quantity in the topical authority game. So, focusing on a few really well-crafted articles that cover a topic comprehensively can sometimes outrank those with a huge content library

I've noticed that Google now prioritizes articles that truly address the intent rather than just having many supporting articles. A small site with deep, consistent and trustworthy content can sometimes be more powerful than a large content farm.

supporting articles really help by making you index faster, from my experience

In my opinion, topical authority is somewhat overrated. I've noticed that Google has always prioritized quality over quantity. Publishing a bunch of average articles just to cover a topic won't get you far. One solid, well-written piece will always do better than ten mediocre ones.

That's right, Google currently prioritizes EEAT and real-world experiences. A few in-depth articles that thoroughly address a problem will be more valuable than thousands of superficial, unfocused pieces of content.

I think this is more like it. I also think it's slightly similar to the backlinks conversation. In a nutshell, no single activity is the SEO silver bullet. You have to put multiple pieces together.

Topical authority is still important in 2026, but many SEOs now overestimate what it can do by itself.

Yes right now Google tends to reward depth and clarity over sheer volume, so a few strong, well-optimized pages can outperform large clusters of thin or repetitive content.

Topical authority still matters in 2026, but real user value and originality now beat publishing endless same-topic content.

Nah, topical authority isn't overrated but people just do it wrong by posting tons of thin, filler garbage, google would rather see five killer posts that actually answer the user than a hundred pages of ai spun fluff, those small sites you're seeing probably have much better backlinks and cleaner onpage than the big bloated ones.

Yes Google seems to value content quality, relevance, and user satisfaction more than just publishing massive topical clusters. A few well written, detailed articles that fully satisfy search intent can often outperform large sites filled with thin or repetitive content.

I’ve seen the same thing on my sites, and the pattern feels pretty clear now. A single page that actually answers the user’s real question can punch way above its weight, even if the site is tiny. I started cutting fluff posts and putting that time into one solid article, and rankings moved faster than any big content push I tried before. Quality seems to pay rent more reliably than volume these days.
