Are forum backlinks still effective in 2026?

forum backlinks still have some value but not like before. They are more useful for getting referral traffic and making your link profile look natural, not for pushing rankings directly. If you mix them with strong contextual and niche-relevant links, then they can support your SEO, but alone they won’t do much.

Forum links don't carry any real weight anymore and google mostly ignores them for rankings. They're only good for making your link profile look natural or grabbing a tiny bit of referral traffic. Spend your energy on niche edits or guest posts if you actually want to move the needle.
 
They can still work but not in the outdated way people expect. They’re not going to boost rankings on their own anymore especially if they’re just profile or low effort drops.

Forum backlinks are no longer as valuable as they used to be, which is why they are no longer included in many SEO strategies today.

They only work for redirecting traffic. But getting traffic is the purpose of a blog so yeah they are valuable.

Sir, Forum links still have some value, but not like before. Low quality profile drops won.
 
Forum backlinks can still help, but only a little. They work best when posted on relevant forums with real discussions. I use them mainly for diversification, not as my main link building method.
 
I’ve found that dropping a link only works in my favor if I’m already part of the convo and people actually care about what I’m sharing. Otherwise it just feels like shouting into the wind. I usually treat forums like slow-burn networking spots and only link when it fits naturally. Keeps things cleaner and folks tend to trust the share a lot more.

One workaround for the "shouting in the wind" issue is two-step posting, where you post on an active thread in a way directly addresses the topic, but raises a point that ties into something on your site. Then later in the day you add a second post on the same thread that drops the link. This way it feels more natural to introduce it, especially if the threads are in some way relevant. If you create enough posts or comments (in a smart way) in places where the link is relevant and contextual with decent authority, it can be a free alternative to getting difficult to place, pricey high authority links from top editorial sites.

They are good for traffic but you have to play smart. You cannot just game or spam big forums. All such forums have checks in place for tackling such attempts.

Forum backlinks can still have value, but I wouldn't build a strategy around them alone. The key difference today is relevance and context.

A genuine mention on an active, niche relevant forum can be useful for traffic, brand exposure, and potentially SEO. Mass posting links across random forums just for backlinks seems far less effective than it used to be.

Personally, I'd view forum links as a nice supplement to a broader link building strategy rather than a primary ranking tactic.

I think forum backlinks still have some value in 2026 especially for link diversity and getting some targeted traffic just don't expect huge ranking boosts from them alone i prefer using relevant forums and making genuine contributions instead of dropping links everywhere
 
Kinda feels like forum links are turning into those old coupons you find in a drawer... some still work, most don’t do much. I’ve had the best luck dropping links only where I’m already chatting and the topic fits naturally. Keeps things looking human and sometimes brings in folks who actually click around. If nothing else, it makes the backlink look less like it was dropped by a bot.
