I start 1 month after my site has been launched....1 month I focus on manual blog comment and social media.. you can start with web 2.0 immediately..get the web 2.0 indexed, matured and after one month put your links..

Using software is better and time saver...it depends on your competition anyway...understand why you need the tool and how you plan to use it..
