Thank you so much for your response! The example you gave showed me that I wasn't utilizing search correctly (wasn't placing my cursor after the asterisk) and that I was being too extreme when analyzing competition. Using that example, I was able to find a good keyword after a few minutes. :)

I feel like I'm missing something with the alphabet soup method. Everything I search for has several sites with answers or potential answers on the first page. I've only found one question that had zero competition. I don't know if I'm expecting it to be too easy or if I'm overthinking things...

Last week, I released a Valentine's Day-themed short story as a reader magnet on SO and put it up on Amazon at 99 cents. It got so many sales that I had the #1 new release for shorts in that category for a while. Nice surprise. Might try again for Mother's Day.
