Contextual placement works best. Adding backlinks naturally inside relevant paragraphs is much more effective than forcing them.

Good on-page SEO is more about structure now. Proper headings, internal linking and fast loading speed make a big difference.:)

It depends on the length of the content, but I usually keep the main keyword natural and avoid overstuffing. User intent matters more than density.
