Google continues to do the heavy work for me but i would not use it exclusively anymore. A gud reddit or pinterest performance can yield surprising levels of traffic when the content matches these social networks requirements.

In all honesty i say niche edits have proven more effective for me only than making hundreds of out reach efforts. I tries to find pages that is receiving some traffic and make sure the anchor text is on point with the rest of the pages content.

I am pre dominantly google first but I does not think that the other search engines are irrelevant. Many of the basics remain the same so if Bing and DDG start sending me more traffic with very little effort then I will be happy to accept it.
