There are host that cost around 10$ per year and they almost all beat free hosting. Don't be penny wise but pound foolish :)

Don't create tons of average blogs, focus instead on creating an amazing one. Sell services on it, books etc. If you choose your niche carefully you can make good money from an excellent blog.

Why not give a few dollars to someone locally to take her picture and use it on your site?

Some host (namecheap is a good example) have a tool in cPanel for auto installation of SSL certificates. This makes things a heck of a lot easier.

You can use Entropay. I'm pretty sure PayPal withdrawals to it are free (minus the PP fee) and you can get an account online in minutes. I don't think they offer a physical card though.
