Yeah, I track indexing separately as well. I normally check a link after a week, and then again after a month. If it still isn’t indexed, I don’t count it toward the campaign results and usually look at the source before deciding whether it’s worth keeping or replacing.

Yes, I’d also stay away from hacked links, spun or auto generated content, aggressive anchor text, and large automated link blasts. These can create a quick boost, but the downside is much bigger.
