This is very simple. It does not matter what number you pick, the outcome after subtracting is always 9 (try 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 - they all give 9), 18, 27 etc. All these have always THE SAME WORD assigned to them, so no matter what number you pick, the result is always right. If it didn`t work...
