I have always thought of Go0gle as highly variable when it comes to ranking websites, the main factor being the niche. The best approach is to study the backlink profile of the first 10 spots, and see how you can do better. Study other niches and see how you can innovate.

Look for low competition and low entry costs, to start with. :D
