But how could they possible find out if you use the non-watermarked image. For all they know you are one of their thousands of customers.

I saw that haha. I got tricked by it and I consider myself relatively savvy so I think it could work but you abandon possible channel branding. When people see something like 20 million views they want to click and that is the reason I clicked too. It depends on the content you make I guess.
