I always do.

Just download Acronis True Image 30 day trial. You can select partitions that you want to back up. If the OS don't boot you can make a bootable CD or USB with acronis and do a backup. Or just download Ubuntu and make a bootable USB or CD. Then just copy files to another hard drive or whatever.

Drupal > WP I first learned to use Drupal then tried WP. Then WP seemed more complicated to me because its not nearly as powerful. I use them both now though. WP for small sites Drupal for larger ones.
