What you can tell by tracing the backlinks is mostly ONLY the INDEXED backlinks. Do not forget there are also crawled (but not indexed) ones. So your best bet would be to create mini link-wheels of your own.

Build an authority site (or at least 10-15 posts) and stuff 'em with contextual link ads.
