Yes, social media metrics are very important. + Everytime someone likes and shares an article in a legit manner, it creates a backlink in facebook and a lot of them can be found in google. Though it's all from one source, that's a lot of backlink juice right there.

Be prepared to sift through tons of absolute garbage accounts before you get one with legitmate followers and interaction.
