I use Market Samurai for this, but I'm certain Google tells you how many monthly searches your terms get and you can use that + a quick top10 analysis to check difficulty too.

Haha yeah I agree, you need to tell them what you just told us here minus the couple of swear words. There is alot of good points in your thoughts and your intentions are good too since you just want to see them getting more traffic and revenue. The truth can hurt, but it's for the best :)
