From what i've heard the PR of a site is reset when it's transferred, could be wrong though. I've heard varying amounts of success from 301 redirects, some people say google can detect them while others swear by them. At least it is a very basic safety net for your main website.

I'd advise you to listen to all the guys above that have given sound advice. Basically don't quit only to find out you don't have the money in the bank to sustain yourself. Good luck whatever you do.

If you know how google works then you should kind of understand how the custom footprints work. Try typing the phrases into google and see what the results are like (inurl etc).
