Somewhat. It depends on your content quality and the userbase attracted. I heard somewhere that small, incremental content, will lure more than large content that no one reads.
Java works better. ActionScript has a limited socket class.. and really, is limited in itself. You could also try PHP too if you're looking for serverside.
I've done numerous vB -> CMS integrations and their fairly simple, just get the user sessions and cookies straight and you can even use vB's template system to power the CMS.
I always go with GoDaddy really, and use creative domain names.. never had a problem with them, other than when I got a SSL cert from namecheap, that was a PAIN to setup...
