Expired domains can still give you a head start but only if their history is clean i always check the backlink profile archive history and whether the domain has changed niches multiple times
From what i've seen google is much better at ignoring random spam backlinks than it used to be i still monitor my backlink profile but i haven't seen them seriously affect a healthy site
for me the best backlinks come from websites that people actually visit a relevant contextual link on a trusted site has consistently performed better than a high metric link from a low quality directory or PBN
improving search intent made the biggest difference instead of adding more keywords i focused on answering users' questions more clearly and rankings improved steadily
in my experience it's usually a combination of factors rather than one thing competitors earn new links google updates its algorithms and user expectations change so i review the page before making any major changes
i tested both edu guest posts and regular niche guest posts and the niche relevant ones performed better overall relevance and page quality mattered much more than the TLD
i don't judge a strategy by rankings alone if impressions crawl activity and user engagement are all moving in the right direction i normally stick with the plan and give it more time
