I think you may be missing the point, rewriting doesn't necessarily protect you.
Imagine if you rewrote Harry Potter series. Maybe you changed all the names and none of the sentences were the same. But it still told the same store. That's still copyright infringement.
It's not that it's impossible to rank without links, it's about increasing your chances.
You may not die in a car crash when you're not wearing a seal belt, but it could definitely help.
If you definitely want to use shared hosting, I'd suggest doing with StableHost. They have some premium plans that are almost the equivalent to a VPS, but they handle everything for you.

I'd increase the price by 10-15%. If they ask why it's more, tell them that's just the way it is.
It may prevent them from stopping in the future because they're worried you'll raise the price again if they have to come back.
There's no reason to lie really because they aren't entitled to...
If the emails are unsolicited, I would definitely recommend creating about 15-20 accounts on Gmail.
You can then use PHP to send via Gmail's SMTP server. Their servers won't get flagged for spam, so you just have to make sure your message passes the filters.
