This is exactly what i am currently doing and i can say it works. But IMO, the OP can summarize the points in a much shorter manner.

But it is obviously a pain in the ass to get your business verified in Google Places with the current method. I understand they have to do that in order to verify a business location but it takes too much time if you are not in America or Europe.

I stopped using AMF awhile ago because they update the anti-bot system and the clicks have been decreased a lot. If i want i can automate the task with macros but f*ck this shit, AMF sucks now.

The local ranking is calculated depending on the traffic of the geo location that you received. There is no formular for that, it is only about quantity. Try to find more Australia traffic and you will see that your Australia rank will increase a lot why global rank will not.
