It takes a lot of time - both doing things and learning about how to do them (SEO). Start building your backlinks and...never stop? That's my advice :)
It's an old method for producing a LOW quality content (unless you rewrite everything). Google translator makes sense most of the time, but "making sense" does not necessarily mean producing good quality ;)

Google will analyze the ratio: amount/quality of links : time. If you can keep extreme link building all the time, you're safe. If there will be a sudden one-time growth in backlinks, it would look unnatural for Google and it might penalize your site.

Yeah, it's all about your niche and target. For adult sites, getting 500 visitors a day is considering nothing and you won't earn much with this few visitors. For a stock/insurance site, it's a LOT and you'll get some nice paid clicks.
