Google watches trends of linking and can spot when a site goes from X links to X+500 overnight. They know that links develop naturally in a slow steady pattern so when your link chart spikes, you get spotlighted for special attention.

Google is getting good at spotting patterns and when they see an overnight spike in backlinks rather than a gradual steady growth, they know some extraordinary method has been employed. I hope I am wrong, for your sake.
