I like pointing to article pages as a more cautionary measure to make the links appear natural. I usually will point 80% of links to articles as that is what people naturally link to anyways, and do 20% to home page and other money pages.
Ordered 2 links for a large ecommerce site that I'm very picky with when it comes to links.
I just gave them the link to my blog and asked them to pick articles they thought would be good to link to. I really like that they did that. They picked great pages to link to and from.

I tried the niche edits/same pbn links everyone has through various vendors and found no use for a legitimate branded site. good for short term results and disposable sites.
