Do a Google search for your given niche and particular keywords, and the first page of results will tell you who your competitors are.

I like pointing to article pages as a more cautionary measure to make the links appear natural. I usually will point 80% of links to articles as that is what people naturally link to anyways, and do 20% to home page and other money pages.
