If you are scared you may use tiered link building. Send PBN links to another site, that may give links to your site. Keep your eyes always on Google webmaster tool. In case you get a spam link report from your owned tier one page, you can cut off link immediately.

Use drip feed. However for main site, keep your own social media presence and send social signal from main accounts as well. If you have solid social media presence, social signals look less spammy.

I know it is really a morale booster when you start making money. My 2 cents are rather than wasting your money in getting approved at affiliate places, focus on getting more and better quality traffic. Believe me once you have convertible traffic, you will get accepted everywhere real quick...
