i'd start by learning how search engines evaluate websites before trying any shortcuts. a lot of beginners jump between methods too quickly but understanding testing risk management and patience saves much more time in the long run
from what i've seen random spam backlinks rarely cause serious damage anymore i still keep an eye on my backlink profile and remove or disavow anything that looks like a coordinated attack just to stay on the safe side
For me refreshing old pages with better search intent and adding a few strong internal links has worked surprisingly well Some rankings improved faster than publishing brand new content
