Check majestic CF and TF. Go through the backlinks profile on majestic, open site explorer or any other backlinks research tool. Check if the profile is clean i.e. no spam, porno etc. Check if the domain have a clean history in Archive.org.

And where you usually buy expired domains with these matrices? Auction? Or there are still expired domains out there to register at regular price?

Give a try to Fiverr. If you have no specialized skills, still you can at least do data entry gigs. Sure very little money for lot of work but this can surely make you $5 a day.

Have you tried Amazon affiliate for German market? I was looking at some German affiliate sites and I believe competition is much less than English language. If you can create content in German, I would suggest to give it a try.
