Well actually, from my personal experience I can honestly tell you that it IS in fact possible to get a site to the top position for a reasonably competitive keyword in 1 - 2 weeks if you know what to do. And to what Codythebest said about backlinks not affecting SERPS, I seriously beg to differ.

The more you diversify the keyword link placement the better it will be... just be random in the percentage (only keeping in mind to use the main keyword at least 50% of the time).

There are loads of mass pinging service around, just use google and you'll find them with ease. And IMO it's worth getting them pinged initially, but overdoing it doesn't help at all.. :P
