what is the common practice the www 301ing to the nonwww or is it the nonwww 301ing to the www? thanks

I have a 302 redirect right now between the two... I will change it to a 301 but just want to double check which one should get the "priority" and going forward when i tell people to backlink to my site what do I tell them to use the www one or the one without the www in front. thanks!

While looking at the inbound links to my site and I have noticed that the number of linking root domains to my site is different in the root domain that it is in the w w w sub domain? I hope my terminology is correct. My question is: for best SEO results which one should I focus my backlinks...
