Spend time analysing their backlinks using tools like ahrefs and majestic.

Check if its indexed and also check the quality of backlinks pointing to it. Use wayback machine to check what the site was about and decide whether it was a legit domain. If a domain is not indexed, its best to avoid buying.

You are getting it all wrong. What niche are you in and how is your competition for your target keywords? 5 links to all 15 posts? or 5 links to your homepage? You need good quality and quantity of links as well as time to let Google rank your keywords.
