Biggest downside is really just cost. They eat your profit margin. You can always, always, find good proxies for your needs if cost was not an issue - but the reality is residential etc which is billed per GB is just out of reach for most projects.
I have a custom tool that does this, specifically so I can flag/refund links that get removed quickly. You can probably vibe code something similar for free too.
Most people feel the content is better simply because they wrote it. The chances are their content is better and you may be looking at the wrong thing - ranking reflects reality of the quality most of the time.
Being hounded by Google but they are usually just spammy sales tools - is this actually legit? Do we need to add this? They didn't explictly state that if we didn't do it our account will get banned but.. you know Google.
I would check if the positions are real - I have had situations that claims thousands of impressions but I could not reproduce the positions in real-life at all so I genuinely marked it down as a bug.
Are you making the content yourself or reposting well-viewed content for your tests? I would expect what you're saying for the latter but not the former.
