By gmail ads i meant the google ads campaign focused on gmail inbox. Those are the ads that targeted person receives in his ‘promos’ column in his personal gmail inbox. I believe they are display ads/gmail.

It might be because a lot of people operate on autopilot and google is well known for providing correct result. Therefore they might click the first results and then leave after the “missmatched” experience
