ping backlinks has worked like a charm. just follow the reviews and hot topics to start. i do suggest getting a simple html page before you do that. be sure to use appropiate title,meta,keywords,h1,p and atleast a few lines of text around your keywords and have a few keywords as anchor text...

content and links make it useful for users, link to sites like returnapet.com its my dog's pet registry, pretty decent and cheap. could use some good pages links to shelters, vets etc.

color scheme could use revision, atleast for the links. could use a tell a friend for the domain and not just share on facebook for posts.

yes, its just a matter of preference, what url you want to use. just use .htaccess to setup the rewrite and 301 redirect to pass on the link juice.

simple and informative for starters.
