I believe the key to communities is to automate posting, since all the posts easily get pushed away it's important to stay active/consistent/visible. You can also re-use content across different communities, if you don't post to your profile.

Have you tried posting to communities? It's a good way to be seen by people that you wouldn't usually get to through posts and retweets. I see them similar to how subreddits are on reddit. You can schedule posts upfront to multiple different communities.
