Squiddo is the best for web 2.0 pages. With good content and a link or two, squiddo pages work really well for links. Not exactly profiles, but still very powerful.

Yes, that is just about correct. It is good to have ups and downs, but not major spikes. So, gradually increase and slow down links, but don't build the same exact number every day.
