This kind of spikes are normal. When Google update favours for your site this kind of boost will happen.

You can add the contextual link from the homepage of your old website. It won't affect both the websites until the link placement make sense. If you want to transfer the traffic from old site to new site, why can't you do permanent 301 redirect?
