    I dont think its an either or choice. I would use trending topics to attract new visitors but evergreen content is what gives them a reason to stay. Thats probably the balance i would aim for.

    I would probably take the no follow link from a high authority site.Even if it does not pass much seo value directly, it can still bring real traffic and make the site look more credible. Ideally though,having a mix of both is probably the better approach.
