If you start with JavaScript, it may hold your interest longer, because there are more ways to play with it. I've tried to teach several others to code, but the first obstacle seems to be getting them to stay engaged. Most give up at the first hurdle.

That's exactly right! I'm employed to write code that is maintainable by anyone for many years. It takes experience to do that. I've hired cheap freelancers in the past, but the code was unusable. I guess YMMV. Imagine getting the neighborhood kid to fix your Maserati. It might work out...
