Python is ok for pre-alpha testing but not good for production apps unless speed is not an issue. Python is slow. Start with perl. Perl is fast, powerful, and easy.
A netbook would be fine as a console device. Just use vnc, remote desktop, or X forwarding to remote into your main system. I have a good personal server running gentoo linux with VMs that I connect to with my laptop. VNC works great when you just want to start a program and forget about it...
I dont see the point in slowing my computer down with anti-virus software. If you get a virus then reimage your box. If you run M$ you should reimage every month anyway. Better yet run linux and if you must run M$ apps do it in a VM or under wine.
