Yes, go ahead and start building a few backlinks. You need to get indexed sometime, and the sooner the better because as you change your store and add products it shows google that the site is actively being updated.

Wordpress is just really slow, especially if you have it on a shared host that may be overloaded. The solution is to ask your ISP what's going on. :) If you are on a shared account that gives you ssh access you can log in and run the "uptime" or "top" commands to get a rough idea of the server...

If you do any programming at all, the fact that osx is based on unix is very handy. You can install free VM software like virtualbox, and run windows apps without issue. Actually, since I have an SSD and plenty of ram, my windows VM runs faster than a lot of native windows machines.
