If you are not techy, well,at this point, you must ask an expert and just pay if needed. After all, you don't want your friend to get mad at you, right?
If this one is true, then, it's Apple's fault for for not thinking about these possibilities. If your friends are doing it and they get a new one, well, you can do it too! It is not considered a fraud since Apple change them whole heartedly :) (just an opinon)
If you are looking for business purposes, it is best to buy those with defects at very low cost and then just have them repaired or change the spare parts needed. That way, you can have much profit. Moreover, if it is for personal use, make sure that you are buying a phone in good condition.
