Okay, okay - so enough SEOMoz whitehat crap - we are really trying to SMASH out some link building BUT in a smart way.
We're sending out around about 2,000 emails a day across a couple of different niche sites - there are at least 10 customised parts on our emails, to ensure they are read, etc...
Here it is - I have killed some major niches with this and did the same with clients, etc:
1. Contextual Linking (Guests posts, resource pages)
2. Directory submissions (country specific)
3. Press release (prweb is actually nearly worth the investment *BS*)
4. Article Submissions (ezine, etc...
Everyone says both - I would agree but try and build a strategy to dissolve the AMOUNT of low quality links. Eg, 50% or something that you can build on.
NOT everyone is perfect and Google knows that, so you can play off it a bit.
There isn't a question of how many links you should do a day.
Just think about the quality that you can build from it. For example, can you consistently build 50 links a day in different types of areas, etc - if not, drop how many you can do.

Definitely feel the thread. The way I move forwards with it is a lot of varied links. For example (as someone said) don't always smash the same link building. Instead of throwing out thousands of blog commenting, space everything out.

The best thing that has helped some of our clients get over the line (as also outlined in this Search Engine Journal article) is local links.
For example, we are in Australia and were getting a lot of internal links BUT when we started getting au links for our clients, the maps started shooting...
This definitely is an eye opener.
