Good to see your case study. The thing is you are targeting only main domain for backlinks. It doesn't seems to be natural..though you diversify the anchor texts. Start building external links for your inner pages too. Those links will also boost up your main domain and it's easier to rank for...

Yes SEMRush is a good one, but the data is not always latest. It just gives an indication & don't assume the data as accurate, but still the best tool. And one more way is, use google keywords tool and give website url (instead of usual keyword) and you can see the keywords that site contains !
