I think what I've learned from this thread is that no one has a clue what's going on :D Is it thin content? TOO much content? PBNs? overly optimised anchor? Too many ads? Too little ads?! Who the f knows! I'm looking through the serps now and sites with worse backlink profiles, worse anchor...
